Kit Kat Roundup - Rum Raisin Edition

The Tokyo area limited edition rum raisin is exactly as advertised - a white chocolate covered Kit Kat with a convincing rum aftertaste. Not bad, but not the best I have tried!

And so, the rankings continue:

  1. Matcha (Adult Sweetness)
  2. Orange
  3. Strawberry Cheesecake
  4. Rum Raisin
  5. Shinshu Apple
  6. Purple Sweet Potato
  7. Nagoya Azuki Bean Sandwich

Earl Grey Tea Ice Cream from Village Ice Cream
If you are a fan of Earl Grey tea, go to Village Ice Cream for a great version of Earl grey tea ice cream. You can really taste the bergamot flavour from the tea leaves.
I like that Village Ice Cream uses local suppliers like Silk Road Spice Merchant and Phil & Sebastian Coffee to make their unique flavours of home-made ice cream. My favourites out of the bunch are:
Earl Grey Tea
Cardamom
Toasted Coconut
Phil & Sebastian Coffee
If you don’t want to wait in line next time, remember to buy a pint of your flavour to bring home.

YSL Rouge Pur Coutour #52 Rosy Coral
Rouge Pur Coutour in #52 Rosy Coral has been flying off the shelves everywhere. Even Elle Australia has written about the lipstick craze caused from #52 Rosy Coral’s reported appearance in the popular Korean drama You From Another Star.
Regardless of whether this shade was worn by Cheon Song Yi, I agree that it is worth the hype. It is a gorgeous bright pink coral which is flattering on most skin tones. So pretty!
I recommend applying with a lip brush for a more sheer effect and layering over a lip balm.

Papri Tots from The Naaco Truck - my favourite midway food this year, with crispy tater tots and fresh toppings. Deep fried sushi breaded in Panko over a bed of fries - would have been great to have different filling options. Good for a quick bite. Deep fried avocados - tried and tested from last year! Thai noodle wrap from Wrap Daddy - unfortunately I didn't like the sweet thai chili sauce which was a bit overpowering. Other than that, the filling was good. Deep fried cheesies - so disappointed in this. So salty that it was inedible! Lemon Heaven lemonades are a staple (iced tea, lime, watermelon, blue raspberry). Lots of flavours to choose from this year. Flower cotton candy made out of brown sugar. Fun to watch this get made. Delimanjoo - mini cakes with custard filling topped with strawberries Deep fried pork belly on a stick!

Calgary Stampede Midway Food 2014

It’s that time of year again to have my annual dose of midway food at the Calgary Stampede.

This year, my favourite new midway treats out of the ones I tried was the Papri Tot from The Naaco Truck and the bacon wrapped pork belly on a stick.

I would recommend to stay away from the inedible deep fried cheesies. So disappointed as I love cheesies!

Only one more day to check out all 32 new midway treats (and food map) here

Tonkotsu ramen - negi, soft tamago, menma, char siu, corn, black garlic oil, squid ink garlic Char siu tacos with pineapple salsa

Ramen at Shiki Menya

I love ramen so was excited when Shiki Menya opened up in Bridgeland. I’ve been to Shiki Menya a few times now and my recommended menu items are as follows:

  • Char siu tacos for the pineapple salsa
  • Tonkotsu classic to really taste the broth
  • Kara miso garlic for the garlic “ra-yu” chili oil
  • Tonkotsu black to try a new school twist with the inclusion of black garlic oil and squid ink garlic

The noodles are made in house and the soup broth is made from scratch. As  such, limited quantities of ramen are served daily and the closing time is dependent on when they sell out. See Shiki Menya’s FAQ for more information.

Breakfast Buffet at Yellow Door Bistro

Who doesn’t love a brunch spot where you can make reservations and avoid long lineups? At $24 per person, the hot breakfast buffet at Yellow Door Bistro is my favourite breakfast buffet in the city.

The Le Creuset mini round cocottes at Yellow Door Bistro include a daily surprise. During my last two visits, I was happy to find wild mushroom grits with a poached egg and delicious mini banana and chocolate pancakes in my mini cocotte. So cute!

You can find your own Le Creuset cocottes here

Ikameshi - grilled squid stuffed with rice Hotate enoki - seared scallops and enoki mushrooms Sukiyaki beef with soft boiled egg - the dashi soy sauce works nicely Nasu (soy sauce braised eggplant) Amuse-bouche - tuna tartare encased in a daikon shell Earl Grey tea tiramisu with homemade vanilla ice cream My favourite matcha latte in Calgary!

Japanese Tapas at Cerezo Cafe & Bar

Cerezo makes my favourite matcha latte in Calgary, but not only that, they also serve a delicious selection of Japanese tapas! The cute space and mismatched furniture add to the charm of the cafe.

As for recommended menu items, here are my faves:

  • Ikameshi - grilled squid stuffed with rice
  • Hotate enoki - seared scallops and enoki mushrooms
  • Ginger mackarel sashimi

Desserts are always beautifully presented at Cerezo and I often find myself picking up cakes and tarts to go. You can also order full size cakes with 3 days notice, choosing from carrot cake, strawberry short cake and cheese cake.
