Brunch at Red’s in Ramsay
I recently had brunch at Red’s location in Ramsay and now have a new breakfast place to add to my list. The Margarita omelette with confit tomatoes, feta cheese and fresh basil hit the spot without being overly heavy. I’d like to go back and try some of the other popular items including the smoked meat hash.
Parking was a bit tough, but there is now a new 2 hr parking zone on 8th St in place. Good news for brunch goers!

Kit Kat Roundup - Orange Edition

For Chinese New Year, a special edition of Kit Kats was available in grocery stores. Not only is the packaging fun, but the creamy orange flavoured chocolate also works well in the Kit Kat form. If you like Terry’s Chocolate Orange, definitely give these Kit Kats a try.

Impeccable service and innovative dishes make Q Haute Cuisine a great place to celebrate special occasions. For our Big Taste gourmet menu, Chef Michele Aurigemma did not disappoint. There were so many interesting components to the dishes, wonderful presentation and just great flavours. Oh, and they also threw in a kitchen tour!

The Big Taste 2014 Recap - River Café Edition

Situated within Prince’s Island Park, I have been wanting to visit River Café since it reopened after the flood. At $15 for 3 courses, River Café’s Big Taste lunch menu provided the perfect opportunity. The courses were as follows:

  • Kale and celeriac soup
  • Confit albacore tuna with puffed farro and roasted carrots
  • Fresh cookies

The dishes were fresh, light and beautifully presented. I will definitely be back for brunch!

The Big Taste 2014 Recap - Big Taste Collaboration Dinner

After last year’s Big Taste Pop Up, I knew I had to snatch up tickets to this year’s six-course Big Taste Collaboration Dinner. This year, the participants included Chefs Darren MacLean (downtownfood), Duncan Ly (Yellow Door Bistro, Raw Bar by Duncan Ly), Michael Allemeier (SAIT), Kyle Groves (Catch) and Megan O’Connor (downtownfood)

Overall, it was a fun evening filled with great food and lovely wine pairings. Still thinking about the Sichuan eggplant, melon broth and breakfast cereal macarons!

The Big Taste 2014 Recap - Yellow Door Bistro Edition

The Big Taste is officially over for this year, which means it is time for recaps! Yellow Door Bistro had a great dinner menu again this year and the highlight was… the salad? 

Yes, I would go back specifically for the cobb salad! Tomato, blue cheese, avocado, bacon lardon, topped with a soft poached egg and a light dill buttermilk dressing - easily makes my list of top salads in Calgary.

Quick Bites at San Dong Banjeom

San Dong Banjeom is a convenient neighbourhood restaurant to visit when you’re in the mood for Korean/Chinese noodles. Quick and simple comfort food!

Go-to dishes include:

  • Half portion of Korean style black bean sauce noodles (jajangmyeon), half portion of spicy seafood noddle soup
  • Sweet and sour deep fried pork

Next up to try for Korean food (as per @gunlee’s recommendation) - Manrijangsung on 7 Ave SW!

Kit Kat Roundup - Shinshu Apple & Nagoya Azuki Bean Sandwich Edition

The latest round of Kit Kat flavours left me a bit disappointed. The Shinshu Apple Kit Kat was promising at first with its fragrant apple scent, unfortunately, it tasted artificial in nature. I also did not like the Nagoya Azuki Bean Sandwich Kit Kat as much as I thought I would - strange since I usually love Azuki beans! There was a gritty texture and the chocolate seemed to overpower the Azuki bean taste.
